Tasked with creating the ‘grand centrepiece’ of PROTO, Alice wanted to make something that everyone could feel a part of. The piece was to be made both by, and for, the community.
Back in February, she and the PROTO team organized an event that brought members of the local creative community together for a night of music, drinks and the opportunity to make a shape that would remain in the space forever: two huge sand pits were placed in the PROTO courtyard, and the 130 attendees dug, drew, pressed, sculpted, and even faceplanted into them. Then Sheyang Li was on standby, melting 100kg of aluminium to over 650 degrees, and live pouring the glowing liquid metal into the sand, fossilising the marks made.
The huge metal forms that resulted from the evening were then transformed into a light installation, resembling a fantastical landscape hanging from the ceiling. Alice created custom glass bulbs, fixing them into the metal to set the lighting for cosy evenings and parties in the space.
