When we can’t see something, we have to imagine it. Think of a Radio Wave. What does it look like? Is it like a lightning bolt? A red wiggly line? Does it look tame and uninteresting, or scary and dangerous? “No, its not a Death Ray. It is of course, completely harmless.” said Dr Alice Bunn, while talking about the use of Micro waves. Despite this, many people believe that Electromagnetic Frequencies (EF), including Radio waves and Micro waves, from devices such as mobile phones and wifi routers, are threatening. They go to great lengths to protect themselves from it: covering their houses with tin foil and spending fortunes on products claiming to ‘block harmful radiation’, in a scramble to save themselves from these terrifying invisible forces. I want to reframe our fear around EF, pointing it in the direction of the images we consume of it.
